AO lag in Windows8??

My 7870 HAWK runs AO perfectly fine in Windows 8. Maybe it's not your GPU but your CPU since... well, AO is old and uses DX7 which modern GPUs dont really support anymore (or so Ive read. If this is false info strike it down)

You're correct, DX7 is no longer supported by modern GPU's.

Sure it is, just not optimized.

Also, you should make sure that you've chosen the right GPU in the settings menu.

Yeah DX7 support is with the Dodo's now. Whatever the card is doing for you is very very minimal compared to what it should/could do. When they said the engine was a must do they meant it. I bet we are 1 or 2 generations of video cards from AO's old engine just not working at all.

ATI/AMD actually cut DX7 years ago , NVIDIA kept the support going a couple years longer. It was after the 4xx I believe that NVIDIA dropped official support.

Now as far as DX7 goes, cards rely on "wrappers" or emulation to stay somewhat compatible (brings back memories of the old Voodoo days ugh). I'm sure there's stuff in the DX runtime itself that helps in that regard also ( as when you update DX you can still see code in the update for dx7 and 8 ), but I have no idea how much. Maybe the emulation is in the DX code rather than the cards at all.

I have issues with launching the game.
I have upgraded from Windows 7 x64 Ultimate to Windows 8 x64 Pro.
When I start Anarchy.exe -> Accept the EULA -> press Play (AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series - Direct 3D TL HAL as rendering device) the game crashes before it even starts. (this is all when i try to start in Windowed Mode without borders.

If i try to start the game in fullscreen mode I get 1 monitor Blacking out the other locking my mouse pointer in the upper left corner. Then it crashes.

I've read through this thread, and correct me if I am wrong. You guys suggest doing a clean install of Win8 instead of having the upgraded version that I've got? Any other suggestions?

I sort of have to pay some credits into orgbank to keep the city from going boom

Friend of mine used the upgrade from windows 7 version, and it had a lot of problems, a clean install runs very well on most hardware.

Upgraded to win8 and AO works so bad,alt+tab is too slow..Today i am gonna try clean install and see if works..

I've tried different driver versions as well as I made sure the right drivers were selected in AO settings. Something is not quite right.

Really dunno what else you guys could tried other then going back to the situation when it worked. There is really no sense in when it should work, i mean, when i upgraded to 8 it didn't work well. After a clean install it worked for me and i'm on a old rig (i7 920 @ 2.6ghz, 6gbs and 1 4890) i haven't noticed really lag problem during raids and for me it runs smooth enough including dual log (dunno how much fps i have). running in windowed 1920x1080

When i went from windows 7 to 8 the first thing i noticed was a huge frame rate drop using my amd 6770. I tried messing with drivers and everything. Changing ao settings from Full screen to window mode fixed my problem.
