I never mentioned anything about the current professionals. I actually think the professional program is pretty ace. I think that the system that is set up to determine who is considered worthy of being the Clan Representative is a bit tight for my taste, and sounds like it has no room for my sort of shenanigans. Despite my often diplomatic demeanor, there are times when I am not so nice, despite being told several times by yourself and other forum mods to keep it down to a dull roar. This alone will likely put me at odds with the pruning system.

I don't think I have any current infractions, but I do have a list of expired ones. In the grand scheme of things I have no idea if this is a short or long list, but its there. Do you trust me to keep it civil 100% of the time? I sure wouldn't. Sometimes the forum rules gets in the way of my personal values. Not that I'd expect to be treated any different than those who break the rules, but eventually I may willingly cross that line. Given the aforementioned above, I'd expect to be bludgeoned because sometimes I find that its important to identify and label foolery and often I don't have the patience to suffer it. Despite this forum having its own set of rules and guidelines, this is still the internet - and fools outnumber every other sort of individual by a wide margin.

If I required you to keep it civil 100% of the time, I'd have to fire every one of the professionals we have, most of my moderation staff, and myself. If you aren't constantly and pointlessly disruptive, haven't recently suggested someone have their offspring stuffed and mounted on the wall, haven't poked a spout of pornography or pictures of tortured dogs - you probably aren't beyond the pale for at least an application.

Look, these forums have been around quite a while now. Some people have mellowed out, some people have gotten testier, but its hard to find someone left who actually speaks who hasn't put a foot wrong at some point. If we think your various shennigans goes over the line, we will let you know, but the instances of a professional shooting off at the mouth and getting fired are very rare, and usually involve NDA protected information.

I will point out, too, that Vhab, who was quite the troll and suspended more than once (including by me) and who had a few, "Try to silence me Mods!" string of posts.... Ended up our boss. One or two minor infractions isn't going to be a huge thing. Probably the stuff we're going to look hardest at is outright harassment, EULA/RoC violations, or exploit issues.

Hrm. Very interesting. I still wouldn't vote myself, but thank you for clearing some of that up.

I don't think anyone would really have any forum infraction issues when handling RP related activities. If people would have to hold back on their posts outside the RP stuff as well though, well I am sure there are several who really should not be representatives then.

Honestly, I am still kind of unsure what the purpose of these representatives would be. I am guessing the most basic thing would be to direct the "feelings" of the playerbase into the path with which they want their faction to follow in the game?

This may come as a shock to some, but in many cases there are players who know the storyline, lore, and the factions better than some of the Event ARKs.

I won't say who, but there are Event ARK who haven't even taken the time to read Prophet Without Honour, which is the very foundation on which all of the Anarchy-Online storyline is built.

A program such as this, should, allow the player representatives a more uninhabited line of communication to the Events Team to express when things are going well, or otherwise, and help to steer future decision making in the proper direction.

Not surprising, since many of you have been playing eons before the current team and I were here and probably for eons after we're gone.

*shrugs* I'll admit I haven't read it, but actually when you look at a house you don't pick it based on only its foundations, don't get me wrong it's an integral part of the story, but it makes little to no reference to the Kyr'ozch, the legacy of the Xan, Lost Eden, etc etc. Rubi-Ka and Anarchy Online's story is 1) readily available to anyone that want to read the timeline on the core website or google it and 2) ever changing and developing. We wouldn't have progression if we didn't move away from original foundations.

And events-feedback@ark.anarchy-online.com isn't direct enough feedback? That and the fact anyone is more than welcome to mail or whisper me ingame at any point. Absolutely this is another method of communication, but it's not like we're giving access to us that hasn't already been there. I have always maintained an open door policy and always will, but actually these representatives will just be a bit more involved in our planning process.

it's alright you're not missing much by not reading it. rubbish book.

  9. #29
It's a pretty good book, and I admire that it's such detailed lore for a game not based on some giant IP (aka Star Wars, or LoTR).

I do think that Events ARK should have read it, but at the same time, I think it would be a mistake to hold to it as a bible to be taken literally - that's already lead to some silly disagreements. The goal here is to use the book and other material as background for forming current RP activities on Rubi-ka now, not dry text to be used in arguments about how things must be.

I've read PWH twice... and I wouldn't wish it on anyone :P

I don't see why an ARK couldn't put on events without reading it. It's probably useful for inspiration but obscure lore does not a fun event make.

As much as I'd love to entertain the notion that PWH was the starstuff that AO was built upon, AO has become nothing short of a collaboration since then.

You can't really have this sort of evolution that we have unless one sole person is holding the only unchallenged creative license in the game.

I wont lie, I read it for the highlights. But I took only a very small portion of the book with me when I created my characters in the AO Universe. I do think its a wonderful basis to start from, but i'd be lying to say I didn't believe that we shouldn't take certain liberties with it for ourselves. As creators of drama and fiction, I wouldn't have it any other way. But, at least we should all respect the presence of the fundamental building blocks of the world itself.

We need a neutral rep imo. I won't apply because I don't believe in mandates accumulations.

To be fair to the book, I still remember when my orgmate stumbled into Roch's garden for the first time after upgrading to expansions and recognized what the "Omega" part of the nearby NPC's name signified. Team chat proceeded to fill with "OMG!"s.

IMO, his reaction is the sort of thing that makes the book worth reading, even if you don't enjoy the book itself (I personally did). Sometimes it's the little details that make a world of difference to your gaming experience.

You can read PwO in a couple of hours! There's really NO excuse for not having read it imo. It's an excellent 'in' for AO and imo, it should be used more if at all possible. Lots of story arcs that could be expanded on I'm sure.
