This is just a system technicality. Free accounts have a soft date of roughly one year, this means they will just auto-deactivate. You can log into your account page at http://register.funcom.com and simply click the "Reactivate account" link on the main page to make the free account playable again -- it will remain free. Just make sure you're viewing the free game account; if you have multiple subscriptions, you can switch which one you're viewing with the drop down box on the left.

I still have a main paid account and few free ones.
In the middle of January this year I invited a friend to try AO.
He had a problem that his account was frozen the same day as he registered and treid to play.
So, I registered a new free account to do some testing.
I’m not sure how soon my account was frozen, but it happened at least twice already since the registration on 17 January.
Reactivation works, but about a month ago a low level character disappeared (the only one on the test account) after auto-freezing & reactivation.
It’s no big deal, the character was list lvl 1…3 iirc, but I worry about my friends’ characters.
My older free accounts seem to be fine so far.
2 weeks ago I invited another friend to try AO. We’re going to play this weekend again, and probably we will keep playing in the future from time to time. Do I need to worry that his account gets frozen or even that he might lose his characters?
Btw. I’m pretty sure that I didn’t change the payment option when I created the newest free account.
