    Arete Landing - The NEW Starter Isle

    GUIDE TABLE OF CONTENTS

    If you'd like to watch two crazy people run through Arete's Landing, check out my husband's channel and see our play of it!

    ~~~~~
    Greetings Froobs and others! As some of you may or may not know, Update 18.7 was released on April 21, 2015. This gave a ton of new changes, and a new starter area, called Arete Landing. I thought it would be a good idea to make up a topic here about the isle and the quests and things on it.
    Of course, this will always be a work in progress!
    WARNING: I found this out the hard way, but do not join the Omni-Tek or Clan before you are ready to leave Arete Landing. It will remove you from the Neutral chat channel (Neu. Newbie OOC) - the default chat channel when you start the game. Neu. Newbie OOC can give you a lot of help and let you ask questions as pretty much everyone is in that channel at the get go. Also, at level 11, you'll be removed from the Neu. Newbie OOC channel. Silly, but you still have /shout and /vicinity to ask questions and look for help.
    NOTE: If you want to skip over the tutorial for whatever reason, go to this post and I'll show you how you can do it quickly.
    ~~~~~

    Okay! So, first off making a character. Everyone starts off on Rubi-Ka (even if you get the expansion for Shade and Keeper, there is no Shadowlands option when you start). There have been quite a number of nano and professional changes to the classes, so please click on the link in the first sentence of this post (it will take you directly to the 18.7 patch notes) so you can see the changes to whatever class you are interested in. It has been suggested that for a very new player, Adventurer or Martial Artist are quite easy to learn and get used to the game with (my first character was an Adventurer). I also won't go over what's the best race, etc, as I feel that is a personal choice.

    NOTE: I would suggest reading this post by Phoenix_Hawk to learn more of the basics of the game and how to install AO, etc. It helped me so I hope it will help you! Just know it still talks about the old starter area, so you can skip over some parts.

    For this guide, we will be following the adventurers of Nanashai, a female Opifex Martial Artist.

    When the game loads up, you'll be greeted by this busy UI. But don't be discouraged or scared! You are able to pretty much move everything around to your liking. There is a great link here with explanations of all the GUI elements.

    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/10...901/UGLxBS.jpg

    Once you get your UI settled, take a look around. There are a number of new things, so we'll go over them.

    Check your Inventory (hitting I) and you'll find you have some items:

    * 50 Health and Nano Recharger
    * 25 Health and Nano Stim
    * Blackmane's Belt Component Platform (Computer Literacy needs to be 20 before you can wear it)
    * Razor's Polarized Specs
    * Colonist Survival Pack (wear on your Back, and you can Right Click on it to give you more Inventory space)
    * Nano Crystal (Composite Utility Expertise)
    * Weapons and one Nano based on your Profession/Class choice

    You can Left click on the Health and Nano items and place them on your hotbar (you target yourself or another person, then Right Click on the health item to use) if you wish. To wear your items and weapons, you need to go into the Wear tab (bottom tab on the left hand bars or Ctrl+1) and either Right Click on the weapon or item, or pick them up with the Left Click and place them in the correct tab. You have a tab for Weapons, Clothing/Armor, Implants, and Social/Clothing. By Shift + Left Clicking on an item in your inventory, it will give you a pop out window about that item.

    When you Right Click on the Nanos you have, it will bring up the Programs (fourth tab on left bar or Ctrl+8) with different category tabs. By Left Clicking and holding, you can drag the Nano icon to your hotbar to use. Targeting yourself or another person, then Right Clicking on the Nano icon will 'cast' the program.

    NOTE: Can't see your friend? They're probably in a different instance (called a GS). To see which you are in, press Shift+F9. Look for where it says 'GS=#'. How do we fix that? You'll need to find and enter the Alien Ship to be in the same area.

    ~~~~
    I'll go over leveling now. If you look at the left hand of your UI, you should see a teal colored box with the icon of a graduation cap and a plus sign. Click on that to bring up the Skills window. Now you have a choice: You can allocate all the points yourself (the points you have available is shown at the top of the window), or use the Suggested IP Distribution button letting the game put points in a 'template' of sorts for your character. Some skills are harder to level than others, in that it takes more IP points to go from one point to another. Example: As a Martial Artist, it takes 6 IP points to go from 3 to 4 Strength. After that, it is 8 IP from 4 to 5.
    Either way, make sure you press the Save Changes button when you like what you see. You can always hit Close if you make a mistake.
    MISC - Vending Terminals, NPC Shops, and Looted Items
    Vending Terminals and Shops
    * Ammunition: Pretty explanitory. It sells different ammo that goes in guns you use. To find out if your weapon uses ammo, you need to look at it. Here's an example. With this weapon, it uses Shotgun Shells. Now you don't reload the weapon physically. What you do is buy the ammo, then place it in your main Inventory window. As you fight, you will automatically reload your weapon when necessary.
    Old OT MPS-00 Police Shotgun
    Ammo: 1/36 ~ Number of ammo in the gun/total ammo it holds
    Rarity: Unknown
    Quality level: 5
    Requirements:
    Wield:
    On Self:
    Burst from 17 and
    Shotgun from 23
    Ammo type: Shotgun Shells ~ Ammo type
    Damage: 2-24(28)
    Dps: 0.5-5.5(6.4)
    Speed:
    Attack 2.49s
    Recharge 2.50s
    Equip delay: 5.50s
    Initiative: Ranged Weapons Initiative
    Location: RightHand
    Range: 12m
    Special: Burst
    Max beneficial skill: 77
    Attack skills: Shotgun 100%
    Defence skills: Duck-Exp 100%
    Damage type: Imp/Proj AC
    Description:
    This old MPS-00 is a simple Shotgun capable of firing bursts. Range is pretty poor, but firepower is pretty high.
    * Junk Shop: Outside of carrying an item to wear and the tradeskill items for the Personal Basic Robot Brain, you can find items to help make AI armor.items (but due to the prices of the items, it isn't worth it). You can also find the Sheet of Curved Carbonum Plating to make Carbonum Armor.
    * Barry the Food Vendor: He sells food and drink. That's pretty much it, though one of the food (Bronto Burger) is used in a mission.
    * Furniture Merchant: Sells different small furniture items, but since we don't own an apartment yet, not worth spending the money on anything.
    * Neutral Clothing Salesman: Sells different social clothing, like shirts and pants. Want to show off your Social wear? Hit F10 > GUI > Equipment Window > check Enable Social Tab and Show Social Tab Only. You can also toggle if you want your headgear visible or not.
    * Tailor: Outside of also selling social clothing, she can do measurements for Jobe Armor fitting. Though since that's a while away, not worth having the items in your inventory.
    * Sarah Greene: This lady sells the HSR sketches for the Carbonum Armor, as well as Newcomer Armor used to upgrade with faction badges, and Sundance Armor.
    * Secondhand Peddler: This one is interesting. Not only does she sell a few things like armor, weapons, Aggression Enhancers and an Emergency Defense Shield Neutralizer, she also gives tutorials on the items as well as about AC and weapons. So do check her out if you want to learn more (since it is a lot of information).
    * Food Provider: Another NPC that sells food and drink.
    * Antonio Stacklund: The NPC you go to for Antonio's Adaptation Factory, he also sells the basic starter weapons in case you want to try a new weapon or dual-wield something.
    * Martial Artist: This terminal sells the special attacks for the Martial Artist profession.
    * Remi Gallois: He sells various weapons and ammo.
    * Cluster and Implant: Each Cluster Terminal sells differert ones (Shiny, Bright, Faded) and the Implant Terminal sells the basic, empty Implants.
    * Pharmacy: This terminal sells stims, rechargers, treatment kits, implant disassembly units, and portable surgery clinics.
    * ICC Tech Supplies: Where you go to get a Vacuum Packed Lock Pick, you can also find Night Vision Goggles and a Mission Key Duplicator.
    ~~~~~

    Some Strange Items You Can Loot

    * So you may notice you've picked up odd things from robots like Highly Plastic Mother-Circuit Array and Anceint Looking Lamp Array. They're actually used for a shoulderpad quest later on. You can find the links for the Omni-Tek here and the Clan here.

    * Find something like Instruction Disc (Shadow Filter)? You use them to create Nanocrystals.

    * The Alien Invasion expansion brought in quests to make Social clothes, so if you get anything like Light Bio Mesh, you can make things on this page.

    * While looting, you might find some Rings of Power. If you combine the Ring of Power - Melee (Source) and Ring of Power - Projectiles (Target) and have Quantum FT at 36, you can make a Ring of Power - Kinetic. You can find more combinations here, courtesy of Legendfluff.

    * Fighting dyna mobs, you might have come across something called Hologram PD: Mossy Rock. Well they are items needed for Agents to make different Hologram Projectors.

    * Find a Robotic Self Preservation System? Seems they are used to make a Solar Powered Tinker Pistol for Engineers.

    * That Newcomer armor you got and upgraded with Badges? You can level it up with you! Just remove the armor and right click on it. Each click raises the QL by one. Just make sure not to accidental/y make the QL higher than your profession level.

    MISC - Tips and Tricks

    This post will be for any tips or tricks I come across that can help you as you adventure. Please feel free to reply or PM me here with any more you can think of!

    ~~~~~
    * You can toggle Walk/Run with Backspace (Default)
    * Want to not show your Headpiece or always wear your Social clothes? Hit F10 > GUI > Equipment and toggle on or off what you want.
    * You can't use items you have stored in a Backpack. Move it to your main Inventory window first.
    * Got a lot of items to sell, but don't want to pick them up one at a time? Ctrl+Right Click the items, and it will pop them straight into the selling part of the Shop.
    * Curious about the level of a NPC or mob? Shift+Left Click on them to give a pop out window with more information.
    * Have a weapon ability such as Fast Attack or Fling Shot? Open the Control Panel (Actions > Control Panel) and you can pick out the icons of Melee and Ranged skills, as well as others from there to put on your hotbar.
    ICC HQ - Andromeda
    So here we are, ready and pumped to be in the ICC HQ. It's a really big place, so let's figure out where to start.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/10...538/no0UGD.jpg
    Look at all the happy (and not so happy) colonists in the building. It looks like we get roped into a single line out of the building, but you can go tot he exit and slip around the ropes to talk with some of the colonists.
    As you exit, you will see many buildings, some being shops just like on Arete Landing. But there are some new things to see.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/10...538/stVH52.jpg
    ~~~~~

    As you head north, you'll see a building with a large sign like this out front.

    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/10...537/Fyv8Hf.jpg

    If you Shift+Left Click on the sign, you'll get a pop up window with more information.

    Freelancers Inc Poster Sign

    NODROP UNIQUE
    Rarity: Unknown
    Description: The Freelancers Inc. Mission Agencies offer a wide variety of unique, exciting mission opportunities for all clearance levels and professions. Visit one today!

    Right-click this sign to receive a mission with waypoints to the Agency building for your faction - Rome Blue for Omni-Tek citizens, Old Athens for Clan members.

    If you are Neutral, you will receive a mission for both Omni-Tek and Clan locations - Please choose which of our facilities you would like to visit.

    To view your mission window, press Ctrl+4.
    Let's do what it says, and Right Click on the sign to get a mission.

    Go to this link to read about the Clan Agency.

    ~~~~~
    Now, turn to your left and you'll also see something new, Mission Terminals.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/14...538/BS3S2U.jpg
    This is where you can get Solo Mission (one person on the terminal) or Team Missions (3 people on the terminal). By Right Clicking on the terminal of your choice, it opens up a new window.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/22...540/cKn50Z.jpg
    Here you can do a few things with sliders. Press the downward arrow to give you more sliders. When you choose what you'd like (such as my example in the above picture) click Request Missions. This will then give you random missions which you can then Shift+Left click on to see more about them as well as the reward (which you can also click on in the pop out window to see what it is as well). Missions are timed, so make sure you are ready to do them when you pick one up.
    Here is a link to more info on the types of missions and what you should bring with you.
    ~~~~~

    Moving a bit northwest from the Mission Terminals, you'll see a building called Fair Trade. Let's check it out.

    Wow! There is a lot of terminals and doors in here. But the one terminal in the corner is what I want to show you. It's the Bank Terminal.

    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/44...538/pcZdtC.jpg

    Here you can store any extra items you're carrying for later (there is no place to bank your Credits though). Once you're done looking around, head back outside.

    ~~~~~
    At the west side of the map, you'll find a place called Shuttles. Here is where you can find terminals and transporters, as well as the Grid to travel around Rubi-Ka.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/10...673/jumSzm.jpg
    The large tubes in the center are transporters. Just look at the nameplate above to see where it will take you.
    The large brown spiky terminal is the Battle Station Terminal. This leads you to what looks to be a PvP battlegrounds place.
    The terminal labeled Grid Access will take you to the Grid. Here you can travel around (sort of like Tron) but you need to have a fair amount of Computer Literacy to take full advantage of this place.
    Finding the up button (looks like a lavender arrow floating above a circle on the ground) and pressing it will take you up a floor where you can board a shuttle to another place. The signs nearby will tell you where the shuttles go.
    ~~~~~

    Now, the Subway.

    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/10...910/Me0Mrc.jpg

    This is a dungeon-like area where you can level and get nice loot.

    ~~~~~
    At the southern area of the map, you will see a building called Shopping. Here, you have different terminals for shopping and Bank Terminals, but also the Market (aka Auction House). NOTE: You need to have the AI expansion to buy and sell items on the Market.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/41...909/P7JGhU.jpg
    The Market in AO is kinda different than in many other MMO games. I'm still learning myself, but this is what I've figured out.
    * When you right click on the Market terminal, it opens what looks to be a browser window that is the Marketplace.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/75...911/WSLdvC.jpg
    * When you want to put something up for sale on the Market, hit the Deposit button, which brings up another small window. Now you not only need to add the item(s) you want to sell, but also add credits because that is what will be pulled out from when you need to do the deposit fee to add the item(s) to the Market.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/30...661/t5I8tQ.jpg
    It can take a few minutes to appear on the first tab (you might have to switch tabs then go back to see it).
    * Now, click on the dot to the left of the item you want to sell, then click the Sell button at the bottom of the window. This will bring you to a new window which will show you what other players are selling the item you are and the prices. (There also is a quick buy area, but no idea about that right now). You can now click on Create a Sell Order and the new window there will let you set up what you want.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/53...540/JlxXut.jpg
    For this example, I put the FROOB shirt up for 100 credits for 56 days (can do between 14 - 56). It takes the fee to add it to the Marketplace. Now Create Sell Order and you're done!
    ~~~~~

    Here we have a Mail Terminal. You can find these in many places (but not in Arete Landing).

    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/10...540/emmeRu.jpg

    Froobs can receive mail in the terminal but cannot send any.

    ~~~~~
    There is one mission you can do as you enter Andromeda.
    Heading slightly to your left when you exit the Arrival Hall, you'll see a very distressed young lady, Natalia Akcora.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/42...538/LBVY0s.jpg
    Natalia Akcora: You have to help me!
    Nanashai: What do you want me to help you with?
    Natalia Akcora: My handbag, a thief stole it! Please hurry, he ran in to the Subway.
    Nanashai: I'll help you out.
    Natalia Akcora: Thank you.
    Looking at our Mission window, we have one hour to find this thief, get the handbag and complete the mission. So let's go!
    When you enter the Subway, look for the thief. Apparently he's not a very good thief, and is just standing there with his ill gotten gains.
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/39...901/DOxq32.jpg
    When defeated, you will get the Stolen Handbag. Let's return to Natalia.
    Natalia Akcora: Did you find the thief?
    Nanashai: I found your handbag.
    Natalia Akcora: Please, give it to me. I hope everything is still there.. (hand over the Stolen Handbag)
    Natalia Akcora: Thank you so much. You are very kind.
    Nanashai: I'm glad I could help.
    Natalia Akcora: My key card.. Credit card.. Lipstick.. It is all here. Thanks again.
    ~~~~~

    Nanashai has reached level 15! With it comes new things ...

    New Level: 15!
    Congratulations! You have now reached the level of Apprentice!
    You have gained 2 new Reset Points. Your total Reset Point count is: 10
    Warning - Complimentary insurance buffer has been reduced. From now on, you will experience resurrection shock following lifeforce transfer to your new body.
    New Level: 20!
    Warning - Complimentary insurance buffer has been terminated. From now on, all experience gained since last insurance payment will be lost upon death. Please, for the good of your future, remember to insure yourself regularly.
    ~~~~~
    Now, you're on your own! Feel free to head wherever you want, leveling in the Subway or heading to your faction's city. Don't be afraid to ask for help in the channels, and do some research. Most guides I've found are still relevant, even if they are a couple of years old.
    So from me to you, happy adventuring on Rubi-Ka in Anarchy Online!
    Just uploaded this guide from where I originally had it on AOFroobs. I did my best to go over it, but if you notice any broken links, links that go to wrong places, etc. let me know!
    Please add comments or info I might have missed or stated incorrectly.
    Hope this helps you in your new adventures!
