    Tier Armour and its acquisition needs a tweak

    There hasn't been one of these threads in a while so I'd like to bring the topic back up.

    Tier armour is pretty obsolete, even for SL-only accounts. Mix and match Miy armours for levelling, and Dustbrigade + Biodome armours for endgame are superior for pretty much every profession in virtually every slot and that's just looking at SL/RK armours. Add in AI and OFAB and when you consider the excruciating pain of farming Tier 2 plus the massively high equipment requirements for the actual stats you get out of it at Tier 3... Well I end up wondering why Tier still even exists.

    So, why would anyone care?
    Tier armour is pretty iconic. It's only really farmed for social nowadays, barring 1 or 2 specific bits for buffing certain stats as part of a twink job. It used to be pretty hot stuff back in the day and it has a fair bit of content associated with it. Why not update it a bit and make it useful and relevant once more instead of letting the whole system go to waste?

    Only a few small fixes would be needed to bring Tier up to spec as a worthwhile alternative for levelling armour. This isn't a total rewrite, this is tweaking to bring effort vs reward into line with the current armour options.

    1) Make the armour itself worth wearing.
    2) Make the catacombs worth teaming up for and going through.

    To make the armour worth wearing, I'd suggest lowering the equip requirements so it's more in line with Miy armours, adding one more buffed stat of some kind in line with Miy armours, adding in a neutral Tier 3 (leave it a boring grey if you must), and streamlining somewhat the steps it takes to get it. Revert the removal of Scheol sigs dropping in Elysium and add in failsafes that stop you from accidentally ruining an expensive bit of armour because you tuned it to the wrong profession (Back pieces and Shoulders I'm looking at you). Maybe cost and TS reqs can also be tweaked. Perhaps, as with Prisoners daily, if you take the relevant Catacombs Daily and complete it you can pick a Will/Advent/Fruition/Embryo/whatever of your choice as a reward. There should be more granular Cata dailies that fit the characters' levels better.

    The Catacombs themselves need a kick up the backside. The mob HP needs to be lowered significantly and mob XP needs to be increased significantly. ALL TIER COMPONENT DROPS MUST DITCH THE NODROP FLAG. I cannot emphasise this enough - Tier 1 parts are all yesdrop which means you can trade and swap with people efficiently and easily. Not so with Tier 2. When you combine the massive mob HP, the nodrop nature of the Tier 2 parts and the fact that Ado catas are a literal waste of time (you have to go to Pen catas if you want ANYTHING to drop within the couple of hours it'll take to kill every single mob you can find), Tier 2 armour is simply not worth the massive pain in the rear end. The only people that bother with this now are rich bored vets who can log 220s to escort lowbies through to loot. Those lowbies would only want Tier for social anyway given all of the vastly superior options available.

    In summary:
    Make the Catacombs suitable for appropriate level teams to chew through at a reasonable rate, with the tier components all being yesdrop and xp rewards being worthwhile. Make the Tier armour itself a competitive option in terms of stats buffed, equip requirements and hassle of building - I'm not asking for it to rival Combined!

    Oh and speed up the NPC dialogue please. You have to hand over so many parts that it takes ages waiting and waiting for slow dialogue each and every time...

    I would love to see the catacombs made more relevant. I think a good way to go about it would be a repeatable mission or two, at least a daily if not quicker. Very little would have to be changed about them to make them a lot like the Dark Ruins and thus really good for xp at various levels. There's an elite daily now, but it's not quite enough to convince people to go through them.

    As for the armor itself, I kind of like its current status as mostly a hard-to-get social armor, it's rare and impressive because of that (and its striking looks of course). I like the way a few pieces are now, with very niche bonuses that are only needed once in a blue moon, but are really handy when you need it. If it gets a rework, I think this would be a good direction to go with most or all of it. OFAB and AI armor generally cover broad, general skills and profession-specific bonuses pretty well, I think it would be really cool if tier armor were set up to help out those people going for less-common builds or covering holes in their gear.

    It is sightly related: I noticed that Cata bosses arent dropping Embryos at all. I may be unlucky as hell, but I killed lots of Ado cata bosses for Yomi Grimmoire and havent see a single embryo. I tested on Scheol Catas as well, killed whole dungeon 2~3 times and not a single embryo from bosses, adds were dropping it "fine" (lower droprate than I remember).

    Insane HP is main problem with catacombs. It's pain to do even with hi-end damage dealers, so anyone leveling or not able to afford such gear is pure insanity...

    Since SL release I made 2 pieces of SL T3 armor, and that was T3 for my soldier. Never then, and never now I would bother. Its nice armor, indeed, but gathering pats and TS is PITA.

    Does anyone have a good resource for screenshots of what all of the tier armor looks like? I find everything I've tried previously unreliable.

    I did school catacombs as part of the school quest lately. I was 6 boxed with a pretty reasonably high DPS team (all 109: 3 MP's, 1 crat, 1 engi, 1 keep) and it was a pretty tough slog.

    on two occasions I got one punched, i.e. 1 hit took out 1 toon.

    Once on my NM crat, with just under 1800 max HP, got hit with a single critical hit for 1790 damage, and he reclaimed.

    the other time was on an MP and he got hit for 2100ish damage on a critical after landing a particularly high damage nuke, and he reclaimed.

    The only reason I was able to solo in there is because pet HP, pet tankability is pretty damn good. with 5 pets swapping aggro, there was very few chances for the gimps to get ganked.

    I was able to farm all the visions needed to progress in the quest without any outside help (no 220's, no mezzers, no OS tank, not even OSB's). But it wasn't easy, and it was slow as hell, and I had 6 toons doing the job. I would not try with less than 6 toons, but I'm impatient.

    Bottom line is, it's possible for 6 toons. The obvious question is how often would you find 6 players intending to do the same content? Pretty rarely i'm afraid, especially when you're competing for drops, and the gear you're collecting for sucks ass.

    Quarterly bump. Ditch the NODROP flags on Tier 2 parts, halve the mob HP, double the mob XP. The rest can come later

    Some excellent ideas there OP which many of us would love to see. Catacombs are a great place in AO that's been totally overlooked for a long time. It would be a small (lol?) job to make those a bit more accessible to people and the returns on time would be worthwwhile, i'm sure.

    I'm for this as well. Lot's of equipment gaps that can be filled with this. Plus having daily missions that actually direct you to catacombs, this makes even more sense.

    I like this suggestion and would like to see similar changes made to the Crepuscule armors as well. Lowering TS requirements and/or removing the nodrop tag would be nice. Gives the game much needed variety.

    Same method of upgrades could be applied to Crepuscule Leathr Armors. It's SL appropriate, has decent mods, but is 1000% harder to get than simply using MIY armors. Start by removing the nodrop flag, add stats slightly better than MIY, and it's good to go.
