Try using this guide, and when you're in the profile inspector, having added AO to the profile, if you scroll down there is an option to enable the application to use optimus, add both the launcher and the client to this profile with optimus set to enable.

The onboard GPU, is actually inside (ondie) your cpu with newer intel chips.
Older laptops had a separate GPU on the motherboard which could be disabled, some advanced bios do allow this feature, most have it locked out.
I've installed the new engine, followed your guide, enabled flags for optimus in the profile inspector, went back on nvidia settings from scratch, and I STILL cant figure out the problem. and I take back what I said about the game running fine in the new client- sure it runs fine, slightly higher fps, but the issue I have with the new client is that i have crazy shadows all around my character all the time. shadows are just messed up. and my nvidia card is still not recognized by anarchy online (as far as I can tell through the game settings and overall performance, only around 25 fps which is slightly better than the 20 i was experiencing before)

This will inevitably lead me to quit anarchy online if I canot find a solution. its so frustrating that it looked and ran sooo much smoother on a laptop i bought secondhand in 2008.

As a final attempt, I will reinstall my graphics drivers, dx12, and anarchy online. Hopefully starting from scratch will solve the issue. Just gonna have to remember to lock all equipment tabs!

For installing dx9 on win10 you can use the link caloss2 posted but you may have to use compatibility mode.
Or you can just download the complete installer

Oddly enough, although it said I neede windows xp or earlier to run the directx9 setup, i ran it with windows vista settings in compatability mode and it ran fine (windows xp servie packs 2 or 3 did not work)

maybe I should try running ao in compatability mode?

I have no idea what that dxdiag output means but I'm sure someelse here does
As for running AO in compatibilty mode I don't think it will help. But try it out it most probably won't make it worse.
After installing DX9 can you now select the correct card in AO?

What it does tell us, is that the system defines the intel gpu as the primary display device. :/

I assume you can't just disable it in the bios or under windows in the device manager?
Behoernchen - Adventurer - SEMPER FIDELIS

LOL i cant disable it in the bios, but found out that I can disable it in the device manager... go figure. Thanks for the suggestion!

anyways Im re-downloading the new client for anarchy online. hopefully it picks up my nvidia card once I've disabled my intel gpu. I'm feeling optimistic this time. What i'm going to have to end up doing though is disabling by intel gpu every time i start anarchy online, and the enabling it again afterwards. since anarchy online seems to be the only game which does not readily use my nvidia card.

By the way I dont think installing dx9 in compatability mode worked actually. It didnt run fine in hidsight, just "differently" and it didnt give me the same error message. but I dont think it actually did anything.

No luck. If I disable the intel graphics, the game does not recognize any graphics card capable of 3d rendering and the game does not start. There are no options in the bios for any of the graphics cards.

Interestingly, anarchy online shows up on my nvidia gpu activity despite not being able to actually select or use the card to play the game. I think the problem here lies within a combination of factors, one being Optimus, an nVidia thing that basically uses the integrated cpu until it needs to do video rendering, and then it uses the nvidia gpu for more power. however the integrated cpu must be the primary display adaptor in optimus and that cant be changed. i think for some reason anarchy cannot recognize the nvidia card because of this. Probably because the GPU is powered down until it needs to be used, so it cannot be selected for in the client or something? pls halp... wtb hotfix patch

I read this thread, the guy has the exact same problem that I do. I talked with tech support from nVidia. They were able to help me with the new client by changin global settings so that nvidia power options are set to maximum performance, really helped fix some issues with the new client including raising fps and it seems that it is even running on my nvidia gpu... to a degree... the new client is still buggy as hell and some buildings just never load. also the shadows from my social hud items look crazy and buggy on the ground. And I still only get roughly 25 fps in borealis, which is about 5 fps higher than the old client, and 5 fps higher than before. however I switched back to the old client due to the bugs in EP2 and the same change in settings has no effect on getting it to run with the nvidia gpu.

The tech support guy thinks that it may have to do with anarchy online itself if it is the only game which is affected by this phenomena. I agree with him, and so does the last posted in the aforementioned thread.

As far as I understood this optimus thing it does decide for you which card to use under certain circumstances. So if you are working on a word document your nvidia gpu does nothing, if you start a game that requires more performance it will use the nvidia card. is that right?
Maybe it hides your nvidia card to be manually selected for that reason.
Can you disable optimus? Like remove it from autostart and only start it when you want?
Can't try it since my nvidia card is to old and not supported.

It's always been on high performance.

And I cannot disable Optimus. At least I'm pretty sure that optimus is the driver from nvidia.

Random thought, have you tried adding AO to steam as a (for now) non-steam game ?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux2l7aSW1WA

Just that given the system configuration it might force it to see AO as a game application.

I added anarchy online as a non steam game, tried running it through steam a couple times, but it crashes on the loading screen (the big teal A symbol).
Not sure why but I'm hoping its related to my problem because I sent a bug report....

also It wont see my nvidia card it settings when I run it through steam.

In windows 10, on the search feature type in NV-DISP and click the NV-DISP.inf selection on the list, this will list your display driver info, for both cards, you should see your card listed in the supported cards at the end of a very long list, and give more information.

I have the 970m in my laptop, and when looking at your dxdiag I noticed you are missing basic inf file paths for the Nvida driver, or what it seems a very short list of nivida dll's.

NVIDIA Optimus ( Hybrid Graphics GPU: Discrete ) will have a power and starting order, this may be disabled at the dos prompt to stop the system from doing a forced PCI-E start.

Have you set the Nvida card to be default in the Nvida control panel? In the manage 3d settings, uncheck "show only programs found on this computer" and have "high performance NVIDIA processor"

This may help, I had issues with the power option, forcing the laptop to use high performance 24/7 and to not switch to lower performance for power saving, then disabling the pci-e slot the integrated card was on, I did however have a bio option to use high performance setting all the time and preferred.
