Thread: Sockscap

    Sockscap

Trying to set up this program to run AO through the firewall blocking my connection, since that'll be my only way to return to active status, but I'm kinda lost since I'm not that big of a geek in IP addresses and stuff

If there's anyone out there with expertise in this field, is there any way you could give me a "how-to" guide? Preferably in a language so that even a 5 year-old could understand how to do it

The same "bounty" as I put up on my guild forum applies here - there's a 100 million credits to the poster that gives me the guide which brings me back online!

    /Avari

PS: I've also been recommended something called HTTP-tunnel, so if anyone knows anything about that, then a "how-to" guide would be welcome

An college firewall, or something equal?
That program needs an proxy server to work. In other words, the most easy, is to get an buddy in your org to set up an server for the program with an spare computer, and let it stand online for you.

Basically, that program reroutes internet trough an communication directly tovards an server, who then acts as your 1. machine on internet, from the common IP side.

First, i guess you dont have access to administrate the firewall.
Second, for this solution to work, you need to have port 22 open(SSH) in the firewall, many have this open by default.

I have tried putting up a SSH tunell to a friend of mine when my ISP had some bad routing problems, i almost got it worked out, but FC uses way too many IP adresses and ports, but if you get them, there shouldnt be a problem. As i see it they only using TCP/IP and not UDP like many other online games, UDP is not forwardable by SSH, so we are lucky here.

To set up a SSH tunnel you need a computer outside the firewall that have a SSH server running and you need a account there, then you need to use a SSH program, like putty to put in all adresses and ports that should be forwarded to your computer. If i remeber correct you also need to edit the hosts file in C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\etc\ and set the dns names FC uses to localhost to direct them to putty instad of the internet.

I can explain more in detail if i get all dns and ports needed to login and run the game.

Edit: This is NOT a guide for a 5 year old, but i need some help form others here to get the rest of the information first and maybe they can more about SSH forwarding than i can.

    Hi,

You can ask if the ports that AO uses can be opened. AO uses TCP ports
7012, 7013 and 7500-7504 (and port 80 as well, but that's already open).

Or, you can try using a program such as SocksCap (www.socks.permeo.com)
    and a program/service such as HTTP-Tunnel (www.http-tunnel.com).

Got this little e-mail from Tech Support, which is why I'm mostly trying to approach a HTTP-tunnel/Sockscap solution. The TCP ports AO uses are included above.

I think the firewall is just a standard one sitting on the connection as a basic defense - and I don't have any admin rights no

Here is an initial list gathered from two logins (although both where in the same location) and for RK1 (Atlantean)
    Anarchy Launcher:
    r011.d1.funcom.com:7500
    r011.d1.funcom.com:80
    r036.d1.funcom.com:7500
    r092.d1.funcom.com:80

    Client:
    r112.d1.funcom.com:7501
    r026.d1.funcom.com:7512
    r066.d1.funcom.com:7501
    r075.d1.funcom.com:7501
    38.119.28.151:80
    38.119.28.152:80

I dont think it would be an easy task as it would seem the IP's varies from login to login, and possibly also from zone to zone (and maybe even from GS to GS)

Well, my ISP got an simmiliar firewall, exept it dont plock any vital ports, atm, just fubars an occational peer to peer game patch.

The program you got name on, is an software, who conencts to an server, who act as your ISP for entire port range, you dont need any info for ports or anything. Exept you need the IP or ww.dot.com of an proxy server, running server version of that program.

You can post on: http://angeltrace.com/ my org's forum, i think some there got proxy server experience, since some play AO from within an firewall

back in the day i lived in a campus i was using a combination of sockscap+ssh tunneling to a socks server ... those were the times

a little tip: most unis i've seen give their students a shell account. IF it has ssh tunnels enabled (most have them ON by default) you're all set:

sockscap + putty dynamic tunneling (basically starts a local socks4/5 server and forwards all requests through dynamically set up tunnels)

if they didn't give you a shell account there are 3 basic ways of traversing a restrictive firewall:

    1) IF it has a single port open - you can use it to set up a tunnel to a socks server of choice
    2) IF the former is not true, the firewall/campus w3 proxy might have CONNECT rule enabled - that's how http tunel and the likes work
    3) some admins tend to forget to restrict ports https service can connect to, which again may be used to traverse the firewall

if none of the above holds true you're basically screwed you can try using http tunnel w/o CONNECT function on the w3 proxy, but the performance is gonna drive you nuts

btw: if you're not much into networking, a simple VPN might work (all the tools needed are built in in windoze xp)

the biggest problem with traversing a firewall, if you can't connect to a shell account directly, is you need someone to set up the "end" part of the tunnel (i.e. a mate with a 'puter running 24/7 or a paid service, DON'T use open socks servers - they're gonna make you start screaming )
