Windows 7 o/s
I have been thinking about doing an upgrade. I plan buying either dual -core or quad- core cpu. I would like some opinions on what version of windows 7 to buy. Does the home version support multiple cpus or just one. in other words do I really need to upgrade to Windows 7 ultimate?
Microsoft loves to confuse the consumer.

Home Premium should be fine.
In fact, this table here explains most.
From your perspective, a multi-CORE cpu is 1 CPU, so as far as any versions go, 2, 4, 8, 512 cores will all work the same on Windows 7.

If I am going to use a dual-core then I will probably use professional or ultimate. In my opinion there is no point in having dual-core if the O/S only sees the dual-core as a single core cpu.
My current system consists of an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ with 1 gig ram
Video card is MSI radeon 4670 HD w/ 512 ram
Microsoft Windows Advisor says my video card won't run Aero UI.

Home Premium will be just fine.
It does support multi cores.
That chart mentions "physical cpu's" which is not the same as the amount of cores you have.
A single CPU can have multiple cores.

your card can run windows aero. the update advisor is wrong in this point. it said the same for my card (hd3850) but there is no problem at all :-)

Thank you all for the advice and comments. I had a brain fart and after giving some thought it all makes sense, phy. cpu x2 on a motherbaord would be like 2 two socket 939's. Going to school to be a Network Admin. In the IT field I should known better but got confused.

Indeed, with the advent of multi-core CPUs, the spread of multi-CPU systems has declined to the extent that you dont see many desktop multi-socket motherboards, but theyre still there in the workstation and server classes.
