Thread: The Official Anarchy Online 10th Anniversary Gathering Thread!

  1. #301

The footage is incoming. We've been working on it, cutting it into pieces and everything before we release it. We just didn't want to slap some naked video up that's like 3 gigs or something so soon. Instead, we got to put the logo on the sucker, throw in some subtitles etc.

I think what he means is adverting a 10 year old product with nothing really to talk about is a big fail with marketing people. I don't think he meant that they don't 'market' it, just that the marketing department doesn't actively buy ad space in magazines and online.

Which means they aren't doing what they're paid to do. Seriously, we've all BEGGED FC to market this game for YEARS, and now we find out it basically comes down to marketing doesn't feel it's worth their time. Hell, Erling Ellingsen ( head of Funcom marketing ) didn't have a problem lying out of his {removed} hyping up AoC before launch, the least he could do is make some amends by hyping this game for the features it really has. Guess he's too busy trying to be a lounge singer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_1gP...eature=related

Yeah, and what do they have to advertise? AO is outdated in most regards, not the least the horrible graphics, which are enough to scare off potential newcomers. It's likely far more effective to get the new engine up and running before you start advertising.

With the current inflated economy and repetitive grindfest that is endgame leveling, I'm not even sure the engine update would satisfy people who are accustomed to modern day MMOs, but at least you can suck 'em in and see if a few stick around.

Well they're paid to market AoC and TSW and BBC all projects that probably generate quite a bit more revenue than AO, so while that trickles in ever so slightly it probably doesn't pay off to market it in its current state.

Yes, AO is ten years NOW. What about before now? How about 2010? 2009? '08,'07,'06,'05?

Meh, I'll let it go. Just seems stupid to me.

Means has a point though. Its not easy to market such an old fossil. How would YOU market it?

Lets say new engine comes out.

Without making marketing completely dishonest, best AO advertising i slogan could come up with was:

" Anarchy Online, the most expensive game on the market, designed by your grandpa, has just been brought to graphics standards from 2003, TRY IT NOW!".

When was the last time you saw honest marketing for a videogame? Also, how can it be graphics standards from 2003? More like present day, what with consoles sitting on everything making sure that everything that uses more than a small corridor looks like something from 2003.

When was the last time you saw 10 year old game marketed? A little marketing mumbo-jumbo is fine, if they push it too much, people will uninstall before leaving newbie island.

I believe I saw some marketing for Ultima Online and EverQuest on the various MMO-only coverage sites. It's the same little ads that show just a picture of concept art or a bit of flash of some exciting events, mixed with some CGI or whatnot.
They say the same stuff as always.
But, marketing costs money, and if you don't get a clear return on your investment, then you don't invest.

Sony also advertised EQ with 2 partial and one full page in PC Gamer in 2008.

So where was Anarchy in 2008?

Even now on gaming sites, if you mention EQ everyone and their brother knows what it is even if they never played it. Mention AO and most think you're talking about that asian crap Atlantica Online.:P

  18. #318
Probably because Anarchy Online was always mentioned by media as the game with the horrible launch that noone plays I remember a couple of 2 page articles on AO maybe .. 3 years back? I can't recall the years.

And EQ was always far more succesful than AO ever was, so it's a nobrainer that Sony have a marketing budget for it, as they apparently offer something that people still want. Whereas that is apparently not the case with AO, else the game would have far more subscribers.

They mentioned a couple of years ago that there was zero point in spending significant advertising dollars on AO until the game start looked a lot shinier than it does now. And they have been doing MMO website advertising all this time - I still see a few jetbike panel adds now and then - probably part of a advertising contract where Funcom has some AO adverts as part of a rotation with AoC in a paid slot on some sites.
