Quest Video Guides

I'm currently working on making video guides for as many quest as I can for AO. I'm starting with newcomer's island and working my way up. I'm going to use this thread to post the URL links to all the guides once I get them finished and on YouTube. Hopefully, these will help not only new players...but all players once I get to the higher level stuff.

I would rather see you making documentaries about the wildlife, the story, the buildings, the mobs.... but that is just my selfish opinion.

Unlike you, I have personally spent many, many hours on newb island helping new players try to understand the game. The most common questions ask are related to the quest and where to find "x mob" and how to do certain things in the quest. I'm sure if everything was "tab q tab q", we wouldn't be having the "run to the left" problem we currently have.

Besides this, I plan to make a video guide for EVERY quest there is. Eventually.

I really don't want to discourage you but I don't think that video guides for quests is a good idea in general. For me the most important parts of a quest guide are

• Where do I get the quest?
• Are there any important parts in the dialog with the NPC?
• What is the reward?
• At what levels can I take the quest?
• At what level should I even try to do it?
• Information about the area I have to go.
• Information about the mobs I should tag, kill, or loot.
• Information about other dangers in the area.
• Information about other features/rewards in the area.

I miss most of those things in a video guide. I still have to find the Bio-Inspector to start the quest (ok, no big deal for this quest).

The way to the quest area is "nice to have" but not really interesting in that case. In later quests you WILL get troubles with the different kinds of transportation. Not everybody will be able to use the Grid (as you might do in your guides). Not everybody can reach all areas in the same way (omni/clan territory for example). Not everybody might be able to use a Yalm where you use one.

Info about dangers in the target area is most important. In your Bio-Inspector guide you are attacked by Rollerrats. No big deal but I just want to know about them ONCE. I am not interested to watch you being attacked multiple times by them. It doesn't give me any more information as I already have.

I have also seen that you did NOT loot some items from the Shore Lizards, Rollerrats, and Stalkers. But as you know you WILL need those items in other quests on the island. So it would have been nice to know that before. The inventory space on noob island is very limited so it would have been nice to know what items are worth keeping and what not.

IMHO it is much more complicated to make a good video guide than to make a written guide with screenshots. Your milage may vary.

don't feel offended. i like your guides. and even if i didn't i don't flame people that put time and effort into something with good intentions. my comment was solely directed to the other guy...ragrugraygen or something. and to prove this i'll flame the thread troll:

dear beloved alfora: oh is his guide not as good as your guide sweetie? by the way where is your guide? so if you don't like his guide, don't watch it. if you want an omnicent all inclusive all covering guide - (not like 90% of your point remotely matter for this quest...like you said yourself) go make one. if you don't.... have a coke and a smile and shut up.

No one said people needed them. There certainly nice, and they could prove to be exceptionally useful to new players still getting on their feet.

Thank you for flaming me after I provided some suggestions to how to make video guides better. Even if 90% of my suggestions were not important for this quest they might be important for other quests. I think they are important for these quests BECAUSE they are quests for beginners.

BTW, in order to judge if a guide is good you have to read or watch it.
