In general, spend some time reading the ingame stuff, description of GUI elements (where available), skills in the skill window, take a look at how item requirements relate to skills/stats (in the skills window again), read the nanoprogram descriptions, etc.; you should be able to figure out a lot by yourself.
There's a simple help system ingame (invoked by typing /help into any chat window) that briefly explains a number of things and game mechanisms in a "quick reference" manner.
Also, just explore the game world: go to places, open doors, see what's out there. It's part of the fun, even with the risk of running into something nasty and getting killed every now and then.

Check out the manual available on the AO website: it's not quite up to date on everything, but it covers most of the basics in detail which helps to understand what's going on around you in the game.

Visit the Profession Academies section on this forum, where you will find a lot of useful info on the profession(s) you want to play. Complete guides including ability/skill progression/suggestion, viable/preferred equipment options, etc. Granted, most of them are written by and for expansion players, but there's a lot of useful info for froobs too.

There are a lot of generic and expansion related gameplay, quest, encounter and tradeskill guides at the AO Universe site. You can find a lot of useful info there along with hints at where to go and what to do at specific level ranges, whenever you feel like getting some guidance instead of finding it out yourself.

There's also AO-Froobs, a site dedicated mostly for froobs, focusing on information that players without expansions will benefit the most of.

There are item database sites that will probably come to play later, once you've learned the basics:
http://auno.org/
http://www.xyphos.com/

You can use the OOC channels in the game to ask questions, but you need to be aware that depending on where you are in the game world, there may be only a few (or none at all) people around who can or willing to answer.
It should work in the more populated cities, where there might be some people around who are more than happy to help a newcomer.

You're in luck my man. Let's start with the basics of IP distribution. These are skills that you should raise every level, max if you can:

Base skills to max every level:

Agility
Intelligence
Stamina

All those have great trickle down for enfo skills, and the agility/stamina works well as base stats for equipping Carbonum armor (have someone else make it for you, enfos don't really tradeskill ). Also, a majority, if not all, of your implants can be twisted to be made to be equipped using one of those abilities.

As for the others, raise strength pretty high, but you don't need to max it every level if you don't have the IP. Raise sense and psychic as needed for skills they need. Eventually, when you have enough IP after you reach TL4 (level 100), you'll have enough to max them all, which you should at that point.

Body skills to max every level:

Body Development

This is your HP, basically. Very important. You should also put some points into nano pool (and eventually max it during/after TL4) so you can cast stuff, but at low levels you can greatly supplement your nano pool with token boards. You should also put points into brawl if your weapon needs it, same goes for dimach. Eventually max those too, but when you're struggling for IP at low levels, just put in enough to get a weapon equipped, maybe a little more for brawl since it is much more useful.

Speed skills to max every level:

Melee Initiative

Makes you swing your weapon faster, essentially. Also put enough points in duck, dodge, and evade to equal double your level (example, if you're level 10, try to have those three at 20 each). Duck is the least important of the three, especially if you don't pvp, so you can slack on that one a little if you're low on IP. Eventually max all 3 when you can, along with nano resist. I find maxing nano initiative at high levels to be useful, too, but it's not essential at low levels since most of our in-fight nanos have a fast cast time. Raise runspeed when needed (eventually max).

Trade skills to max every level:

Computer Literacy

Max that every level. Arguably the first or second most important skill to max. It allows you to equip better belts and NCU chips. Later on, for aggro purposes, you might want to put some points into psychology, but that's way, way down the road.

Nano and aiding skills to max every level:

Treatment

That's the other first/second most important skill. It allows you to equip better implants and use better healing kits. Other nano and aiding skills to consider are those that are used for your nanos. That means pretty much everything but Time and Space. Don't max them every level when you're starting out, as they are some of the most expensive skills for us, but keep them high enough to cast the nanos you will need. When starting out, you should be able to cast nanos +/- 10 QLs or so relative to your level, depending on your gear. You're going to need some, not much, but some points into Time and Space and First Aid eventually to help with healing and to use nano rechargers.

Weapon skills:

Pick one of the following and stick with it, and completely ignore the rest. Weapons that use more than one weaponskill for enfos are terrible. Just focus on one, they're all about the same and don't let anyone tell you 2HE is any better (it isn't for froobs):

1 hand blunt
1 hand edge
Piercing
2 hand blunt
2 hand edge
Melee energy weapons (not really a viable choice for new people, good melee energy weapons are few and far between and not really the best)

In all honesty, the easiest lines to get weapons for at a low level/new player right now are either 1HE, piercing, or 2HB, but just go with whatever you like.

A good amount of your weapons will also need fast attack. Raise it enough to equip when first starting out, and eventually max when you have the IP to spare.

I know that's a lot of text, but keep in mind, that's just the basics. We haven't gotten into more...esoteric skills to raise.

Sites that might be useful:

http://aovault.ign.com/View.php?view...ry_select_id=8
http://pricewatch.aomarket.com/ (to find a pretty good idea of what an item is worth to someone else)
http://www.ao-universe.com/main.php
http://arpa3.net/anarchy-online/ (for where to get non shop buyable nanos, among other things)

Someone provide him with a link to a working version of clicksaver if one exist and a guide on how to use it.
