Completely unsupported AO-On-Linux howto
This step-by-step guide will help you install and run AO in Linux (including working patcher). Note that this guide is COMPLETELY UNSUPPORTED, Funcom support staff will NOT help you with anything related to this guide, or any problems you might encounter with the install while playing using this setup.
The only supported operating system for Anarchy Online is Windows, and you will be doing this entirely at your own risk. Basic Linux commandline knowledge is assumed.
1) Install Wine.
2) Download and install IEs4Linux. Select the options to install IE6. I will assume you used the default install directory of ~/.ies4linux.
Code:
tar xvzf ies4linux*
cd ies4linux*
./ies4linux
3) Make a copy of ~/.ies4linux/ie6 and call it ~/.wine-ao.
Code:
cp -R ~/.ies4linux/ie6 ~/.wine-ao
4) Download the 18.1.1 full install
5) Run the AO installer. Accept the default install path.
Code:
export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-ao
wine AnarchyOnline_18.1.1_EP1_EP2_EP3.exe
6) Create a startup script. Save it with whatever name you want (ao.sh, for example).
Code:
#!/bin/bash
export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-ao
cd $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/Program\ Files/Funcom/Anarchy\ Online
wine Client.exe
7) Set the proper permissions.
8) Run the script.
To uninstall, delete ~/.wine-ao.

That explains why you had so much time to discuss with the community and post Weekly Updates on forums...

Not really as this was a joke...I am not playing on Linux as it is unsupported. Discussion with the community and weekly updates would be the explanation of what happened to my weekends and evenings

And here we have the real reason for cheaper Jobe Unlearning devices - without knowing how to get a ship in a city raid Means hasn't been able to farm enough credits to pay at the old price.
Just kidding ofc, <3 the hard work you're doing Means.
Back on topic - good news, now I can start using my linux box again

I tried using winetricks to add support for vs2005/vs2005sp1, but no luck. (I didn't put that much time into it tho.)

Dear Means, dear Macrosun!
I want to bring an opportunity to your attention:
Why don't you contact the guys over at Transgaming to make sure Anarchy Online is and will always be running on Linux with Cedega.
They are doing this kind of software for Linux and Mac. It most likely will expand your playerbase without the need to code Linux or Mac clients.
Would it be a bad thing to see Anarchy Online in the certified games list?
p.s.
They're doing semi-native Linux clients (Eve Online, Spore...) built upon their engine too.
