DM: Jewelry

Leveling a lowby enf, I stumbled on the daily mish "Jewelry". It requires one to go hunt gems and to use a jensen ore cutter on 5 gems and to toss those to mr. Carlsberg (finally I know what that guy is used for!).

Problem is, lowbies (50+) don't boost tradeskills most of the time, especially not enfoes.

I think FC should have provided a modified Jensen ore cutter which has a 5-fold use (so disappears after 5th use), and enables lowbies to cut any gem they need to toss to the guy, without any reqs.

Especially the quest hints to hunting the gems in Foremans. So lvl 50 (slow), has to move all the way over RK to get gems, then has to get back to the civilized world to try to: 1. find someone to ts it for them 2. try and find the needed buffs + city machine to do it themselves.

That's too much hassle for most people, seriously.

Or 3. just go anywhere there is a high density of low level reets to farm 5 extremely low level gems.

this option is the best yes.
and farm more gems while you're here, to have some stock if 18h later you get the same daily.

Backyards work for finding low gems as well.

I think my only concern with this mission is how it's set up - pointing toons only to Foreman's and the mission counter (1/5). Have the mission mention other common outdoor mobs that drop gems and either ditch the counter or don't start it until you start turning in the gems.

If we add something that cuts gems w/no tradeskills and no additional requirements there invariably will be people complaining about (or using it for) cutting high ql gems to sell and then turning in 5 BY gems for the mission that anyone can cut.

IMHO it is good that some things are "too much hassle" for some professions.

Team play is good. Communication among players is good. Simple, boring quests are bad. Being able to buy something that simulate things that other professions can do (fgrid, portable bank) is bad.

I"m not sure if this is the same quest, but i've had lower level orgmates ask me to cut gems for them for some daily.

I don't always agree with Funcom's content but I think anything that gets new players into the 'meat' of the game is good. Either they have the skills to do it, are told to go use their org HQ or ask someone in their org to help them (a tradeskiller). Starting them off early with the concept that some tradeskilling will need to be done in-game and getting them to start asking the questions to get it done is a good thing from my vantage point.

Quests like these are the perfect conversation starters. "Hey I just got this quest and I need to find a jensen gem cutter.. where do I get it" "Oh, the tradeskill area.. didn't realize" and maybe that leads to more dialogue in their org about what types of things they can tradeskill like custom implants, nano crystal creation, etc.

the gem cutter is given by the quest, so it's all given to them, they chase the gems, then they are stuck.

Real newbies don't know what to do.

I'd prefer the skills to cut gems dramatically lowered, have the game force the lowbies to cut the gems themselves, and have a little tutorial pop-up about tradeskilling, mentioning that for the daily, reqs have been lowered to allow them to finish the quest, etc. And that they might need to find tradeskillers to do the crafts for them.

Real newbies and even many other guys never know what to do when it comes to things other than "press Q and kill mobs".

Seriously, the tradeskill window is shown in the manual of AO as is the shortcut "shift + right-click". I know that nobody reads manuals but you could also just use GUI and find it in
Actions -> Windows -> Tradeskill Interface

There are a number of references to the tradeskill interface in quest descriptions (mostly like "press shift + T to open the tradeskill window). So, people should know about it. And if they don't they can always ask which is always a good thing (/wave to Traderjill).

Besides, I am absolutely against making everything easier and easier!

Serious tradeskilling should be the domain of real tradeskillers.
Fast running and using the grid should be the domain of fixers.
Healing should be the domain of doctors.
Tanking should be the domain of enforcers.
etc. etc.

A great variety of professions is good! I don't want to play a game where everybody can do the same things equally. I want to be very good at one things and very bad at others.

Maybe there should be some signs advertising Recipebot. And what I love about this game is the character specialisation. My NT sits waiting in Borealis, my Enforcer hides in TOTW, all await for me, the Engie, to get the skills to make good Carb and cook up some nice nanos from the disks I've found. Twinking TS levels for that one step in one one job is challenging fun. Yes, I really am that sad.

I hunt gems for that daily mission in the old backyards and/or now I bring ql 2 gems off the newbie island and save them for when I get the cut gems mission. Sending the toon that gets this mission to Foreman's to collect them is wrong though ... Foreman's is not the place to send someone that size to hunt gems solo.

Well, sending toons to Foreman's around lvl 50-74 is a good idea because that place is nice to find teams, level up, and get loot (=not for heckn00bs).

But suggesting to them that they should collect gems AND invest IPs into tradeskills at that level and for all professions is not a good idea.

50-74 is a good size for Foreman's and I've noticed that the gems drop more often on the entry area mobs than I remembered.

However, and this may be a bug, I've gotten this mission on sub-50 toons only. Level 35, 37, 41 are not a good match for Foreman's.
