    DirectX problems

I'm unable to start the game due to problems with DirectX. I'm currently running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with a Radeon HD 4870 (1GB ram) [full system spec at bottom]. I get the following error message:

    ---------------------------
    Error occurred in game.
    ---------------------------
No graphics device with hardwaresupport was found using DirectX!
If this is not correct restarting the computer might help.
    ---------------------------
    OK
    ---------------------------

All my other games work fine including other games that use DirectX (such as EVE Online), but I have noticed some oddities in DxDiag [full output at bottom] such as "DirectDraw Acceleration: Disabled" and "Direct3D Acceleration: Partially". I've tried going to the Display Properties -> Troubleshooting to try to enable/disable hardware acceleration, but the option to Change Settings is greyed out. I've updated DirectX, updated my mobo chipset drivers, tried current ATI drivers w/ Catalyst Control Center, w/o CCC, and even just manually installed the drivers by themselves, and tried just the generic VGA drivers, and none of them have worked or caused the status of DirectDraw/3D in DxDiag to change. I really don't think it's a problem with UAC, it's installed to a different folder than any of the Windows-created ones such as C:/Program Files. I've tried running it as Administrator (no change) and tried it in compatibility mode for XP SP2 (caused a VC++ runtime error). Does anyone have any other ideas to try? I've included all the diagnostic info I could think of off the top of my head, let me know if there's anything else that might help and I'll provide it.

Thanks for the help so I can get back to playing again after a long absence

I don't have access to any win7 machines to test, but try this:

    Start -> run -> DxDiag

on the Display tab, can you toggle DirectDraw/Direct3D Acceleration ?

Good thought, but unfortunately there is no option there to enable it, or even to test it.

you got the 10.3 or 10.4 drivers. get the 10.4 version and install it. make sure you select the video device properly in AO's settings. the problem seem to be with the driver installation and not with AO.

D3D Status: D3D v7 or earlier apps disabled, D3D v8 or later apps enabled
that line worried me. AO is dx7.

I've downloaded and installed the latest from http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_ca...indows-7-64bit . I'll be honest, though, I'm not sure what the version 10.4 is referring to as the driver version is only 8.723 unless it might be referring to the catalyst version?

As far as selecting the video device, the two options AO gives are "Primary Display Driver - RGB Emulation" and "ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series - RGB Emulation" both of which give the same error.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I guess I'll try messing with various versions of ATI drivers while I wait for more suggestions.

UPDATE: I've tried the following driver versions with corresponding catalyst versions in brackets and still no dice:
    8.723 [10.4]
    8.712 [10.3]
    8.690 [10.1]
    8.681 [9.12]
    8.650 [9.9]
    8.573 [9.1]

UPDATE 2: Also tried running it in the XP Mode VM, still didn't work.

you're missing the DX options. try to reinstall dx from MS link here. remove the catalyst drivers, install dx, reinstall catalyst drivers.

After you uninstall and before you reinstall the Catalyst, download and use DriverSweeper (http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/), it cleans driver "remains" (that may prevent a proper installation of new drivers).

p.s. Did AO ever run on that current system of yours ?

p.p.s. You said other Dx games worked, what are some of those ? (besides Eve that is, which, according to it's minimum system requirements, can run on an ancient GeForce 5 - that's at least 6 nVidia GFX generations back )

i think dx11 that comes with win 7 only keeps backward compatibility for titles for dx8 onwards, for older ones dx redistributable package from MS being needed. eve has a dx9 engine.

    Not (entirely?) correct.
I'm using Win7 x64 and a Dx11 card (Radeon 5770) and AO was running fine from day 1, even before any other game had the chance to mess with DirectX and install the various earlier redist packages they contained, for whatever reason they did that to an up to date DirectX installation...

The fact that AO lists only 2 driver options (and both of them are emulated) instead of the usual 6 seems to suggest that something's wrong with the driver or DirectX installation.

To go a little of topic, AO does not use DX* for grapics DX7 is only used for pointing devices like your mouste/trackball ect and to identify that your GFX card is 3D capabel.

Anything GFX related is done by the prosessor that does not make use of DX, offcourse if you force antialias ect. that is handled by your GFX card but that is still not DX.

Also I would suggest that the player in this case might want to reinstall AO.

    * = DirectX

Unfortunately the only way I know of un/reinstalling DX is to use one of a couple kludgy tools that just rip it out of your system. I might try these later if nothing else works, but I have a feeling that they might cause more problems than they fix.

NOTE: I'm not sure off the top of my head which of these use OpenGL or DirectX but I'll just list them all.

    Burnout Paradise
Call of Duty: World at War
    Counter-Strike
    Empire Earth 3
    Eve Online
    Left 4 Dead
    Modern Warfare 2
    Need for Speed: Carbon
    Spore

SimCity4 gave a warning about not being able to initialize DirectDraw but still worked.
Halo: CE wouldn't work due to not being able to initialize DirectDraw.

So apparently it's the older games that aren't working, but the recent ones seem to be fine. It seems that SimCity4 uses DX7 and Halo:CE DX8 from what I saw with a quick 30-second google search, but feel free to to correct me if that's wrong.

This may be the key, I'll search for this older DX redistributable package and see what I can find.

Again, don't think you can reinstall DirectX easily, and I've tried several versions of the graphics driver from most recent (2 weeks ago) to earlier (2 or 3 years).

Thanks for the help so far, I'm gonna search to see if this DX package exists, then try another run of graphics drivers using DriverSweep in between.

    UPDATE (DX):
Found an old DX9 redistributable, installed and AO still doesn't work.
Found an ancient DX7 installer, refused to install ("incompatible with this version of Windows").
Found a DX8 redistributable, supposedly installed fine but took less than a second and AO still doesn't work.

    UPDATE (Drivers):
Cleaned off each and every version of the drivers I had installed using DriverSweeper, then installed latest version and still no change.
Installed AO again after that, still no change.

Any other suggestions other than restarting into another OS every time I want to play? >.<

the DX redist package is basically updating the DX on your computer. since Win 7 already comes with DX11, the redist package just install the missing libraries, it doesn't change anything else. so have no fear. no need to uninstall or anything, just run the latest redistributable from the link i posted.
the fact that you're having some problems with other games too, like Halo and Simcity4, suggests that this is infact not related to AO, but to a bad OS/driver/DX installation.
these 2 lines shouldn't be in your dxdiag output:
    DDraw Status: Disabled
D3D Status: D3D v7 or earlier apps disabled, D3D v8 or later apps enabled
doing the install/reinstall in the correct order is usually the key. so again:
    - uninstall the drivers and use driver sweep or similar to clean up
    - install dx redist from the link
    - install the newest catalyst drivers.

if this fails, you might have to reinstall the OS.

I might just be totally oblivious, but AFAIK there is no way to reinstall DX. Running the redist installer from the link provided gives me the option to accept the EULA and once I do it simply says "DirectX setup has determined that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is necessary."
and the only option from that point is Finish which just exits the installer.

I agree that the problem might have to do with DX, but of the three games not working, AO is the only one that has been updated in the past 7 years. >.< Poking around to try to find people with similar problems by checking on message boards for the original version of Halo, according to Microsoft it is officially NOT supported on Windows 7. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/com...ture&os=32-bit) It smells to me like Microsoft is dropping reverse compatibility for DX7 and earlier, which is understandable seeing how old it is.

It seems somewhat ridiculous that a game that's "dynamic" and continually "updated" is still using a version of DirectX that's now 4 versions old and turns 10 years old in a couple of months. I mean, just looking at other stuff that happened the year DX7 was last updated (Bush elected for first term, first resident crew enters International Space Station, last Peanuts comic published, Y2K) shows just how old this technology is -- XP was released with DX8.

Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate all the help that everyone who's posted here has provided. However, having tried everything short of reinstalling the OS [which might not even work] it would appear that AO is just simply too old of a game to run on my current PC setup, and looking at other posts on this board, it would appear that even the server side is suffering quite a bit from age as well with users' items randomly disappearing and not even really being offered much support to get them back.

If anybody has any other ideas, feel free to post them, I'll still check this board for the next few days. But it appears to me that the game is simply too old to work, which is a shame, but it was good while it lasted.

That's not really true. I run AO on 2 machines which hardly can be called old gear:
    1. Phenom X4 955 BE; ATI 5850; 4GB DDR3; 2xWD blacks in RAID0; other nonessential stuff; Win 7 64
    2. Core 2 Duo T9600; NVidia 9600M GT; 4GB DDR2; 2x320GB Samsungs in RAID0; other stuff; Win 7 64

On the first one AO runs without any issues, on second one I sometimes have problems with overheating, but that is because of bad laptop design and not AO.
Apparently yours is the first of this type of problem regarding DX, since I cannot recall any other since I've been browsing these boards.

What you might try are these steps listed here.

Also, can you post a list of progs from the task manager?

Tried the list of steps, still doesn't work.

A random thought I just had though: my processor doesn't support hardware virtualization (watch out researching this, as it appears that another edition of the Q8400 was released at some point that now includes it but I know for a fact that my Q8400 does NOT support it). Could it be that DX7 in Win 7 requires it? [you should be able to turn off the support in BIOS if you wouldn't mind testing to see if it would run w/o VT.] It just strikes me as very odd that a software/configuration/driver problem (one that I could fix anyways) would allow DX8+ to work perfectly fine but not DX7, and seeing as I've never had any other flakiness on this relatively new hardware (<12 months old) I doubt it's a hardware problem (although hardware problems do love to be infuriatingly random like that, so who knows).

Also I agree that from what I've found, there's really not many other people on the internet having this problem, but I think it's because there's not many people trying to run a mix of relatively recent software (Win 7 64) and quite older software (DX7) like this and willing to chase down what the problem is. Of course, most of this is just conjecture and hunches on my part, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like there's too much else to go on at this point...

Try the directx redist from here.
Everything I could find on the web related to your issue points out to one of the followings:
    - video hardware acceleration is disabled
    - video drivers broken
    - mobo drivers broken
    - directx not installed properly
    - UAC interference

Other than that, i'm all out of ideas.

    link 1
    link 2
    link 3
    link 4

P.S. Strangely enough all the similar problems on the web relate to AO.
P.S.2. A workaround from the last link I posted:
    Run Regedit
, the two key change to 0
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ DirectDraw]
    "EmulationOnly" = dword: 00000000

    [_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Direct3D \ Drivers \]
    "SoftwareOnly" = dword: 00000000
